Penelope and Unemployment
I follow a number of blogs. I follow a number specifically about blogging, and a number specifically about the job market. Penelope Trunk’s Brazen Careerist fits both of those categories. She is a little crazy – her posts are not for the delicate, and she pulls no punches about discussing her private life. She is also extremely insightful when it comes to careers and to some extent represents a “new thinking” when it comes to a career.
Dealing With Unemployment
In her post titled “How to deal with unemployment in the face of holiday cheer” Penelope covers some views that I share about unemployment in today’s work environment. Please take a look.
and I’ll Add
Looking for work is a full time job. If you already have a job and are looking for a new one, you have some long days ahead of you. Here are some of the things that help the search:
- An online presence – Take control of what the Internet says about you.
- A strong digital resume – Make sure your resume is online and searchable. I like Emurse for resume hosting.
- A “Personal” card – Like a business card, but representing you, not your company. Either a paper one or a digital one. Or both.
- A social presence – Now is the time to be a social butterfly, both online and in real life. Be active on twitter, blogs, linked in and facebook as well as any in-person social situation that will bring you in contact with people.

I’m a fan of the online presence stuff as well – mostly because of you – and I agree! I realized recently that Googling my name didn’t show up much.. some old baseball player, some country singer, my dad, and a few random mailing list things from me.
With that, I started a blog, and have tried to keep with topics that are somewhat relative to the field.. in no way am I looking for a job right now, but I think in general it’s good to stay up with controlling your presence, the social networking, blah blah blah. On top of that, it’s fun, and if the topics are interesting to people, you end up helping others in the process.
And, I like that digital business card thing- I think I’ll be setting one of those up- thanks! :D
Thanks for the feedback, Chet!
The DBC was really easy to do, and I love having a simple-to-remember URL to point people to for all my info. And it was very easy to hack in a link for my online resume, too!
